I have had the pleasure of dressing quite a few of the AFL boys for this prestigious award, but this is the very first time I have had the honour of dressing a couple. Yes, a husband and a wife. Most of you will know that I only make men’s suits, but when I met Annie Nolan and her husband Liam Picken from the Western Bulldogs, I could not resist. Annie is a strikingly gorgeous woman with a real presence about her, and this was more than just a Brownlow outfit, it was a statement.
Annie, otherwise know as Uncanny Annie, along with her best friend Hayley Cooney were featured in Saturday’s Herald Sun talking about the pressure and bullying that occurs around Brownlow fashion and were gunning for a #bullyfreebrownlow . For this reason, Annie really wanted to mach her football playing husband in wearing a tux with black tie. I welcomed the challenge.
Both Lima and Annie wore a beautiful pure wool black tux, cloth sourced from Lanificio Cerruti in Italy. The details were important as was the silhouette. I still wanted to Annie to feel feminine and beautiful but with some of the structure of a man’s suit. I matched the satin lapels with satin trim pockets for both Liam and Annie, but gave Liam a wider lapel which dominated the jacket and worked well with his proportions. Annie’s jacket however was slightly cropped with a more narrow lapel and exaggerated shoulders to denote of era of power suiting. I gave her narrow sleeves and a narrow pant with satin trim waistband, an of course the addition of an amazing pair of Stella McCartney pumps allowed it all to shine. I was very much inspired by a 1990’s Jerry Hall for this suit, and of course both Annie and Jerry are tall gorgeous blondes, so i think it was the right fit.
I couldn’t be happier with the outcome and loved watching Annie and Liam walk down the red carpet at Crown Casino last night. Now, all Liam and the rest of the Bulldogs need to focus on is the main game this Saturday. Go Doggies, we are all behind you.
