Phillip & Emily
It feels like it’s been such a long time since I’ve written about one of my client’s weddings, I guess because it is. The world hasn’t been normal for some time now, and Melbourne particularly so. With restrictions on weddings and large events, there has been little to celebrate. Fortunately for Phillip and Emily, they got to celebrate their big day, back in February of 2020, before a pandemic put everything to halt.
Looking back at the photos, I felt joy for both Phillip and Emily, and for their friends and families that we’re able to celebrate with them. I also felt a sense of pride. Weddings are a big part of why I love what I do and I love being able to contribute to a couple’s special day.
Phil’s wedding suit was a long time in the making. I think we had our initial consultation 6-7 months before the wedding itself. Phil’s brief to me “was something elegant and timeless.” As Phil wears a business suit every day for work, he wanted something that stood out and was special. We looked at different versions of Black Tie and what it could look like, but Phil didn’t want just a standard tux. He wanted something that made a statement. That’s when I presented Phil with Dormeuil’s Ceremonial Collection.
Dormeuil has one of the most extensive ranges of formal cloth for men. There is so much variety and so many options that you would never find on a clothing rack in a menswear store. The Ceremonial Collection is all about the luxurious cloth that is unique and diverse formal wear.
Phil chose a beautiful black on black Diamond Jaquard weave finished with satin shawl lapels and satin buttons. The waist-coat and trousers were also from the Dormeuil Celebration Collection, but we opted for a plain black twill, which complemented the jacket beautifully.
However, Phil wanted something extra. He and Emily wanted to make a grand entrance upon arrival at their wedding reception, and so we discussed Phillip switching his black tuxedo jacket for a white dinner jacket. Something bold and elegant, that made the statement Phillip was looking for. A jacket so special and limited, that Benedict Cumberbatch wore it for the 2019 Met Gala. A 100% Bamboo cloth designed and woven in Italy for Huddersfield Textiles. This cloth is so extremely special not only due to its strength, and environmental footprint, but its beautiful Oxford weave texture and pure as snow colour. Achieving a pure white colour is difficult with 100% wool, but bamboo is a much stronger textile and can be washed and washed until the colour is almost luminous.
We designed this jacket to be quite different from Phil’s tuxedo jacket. We opted for a one-button jacket, with a broad peak lapel, ensuring we matched the design of the groomsmen suits, which we also made in house. We decided to forego that satin details as the bamboo cloth was lustrous enough on its own.
Phillip and Emily wanted to ensure that the groomsmen complemented the groom as well as the bridesmaids. For this, we sourced a beautiful French Navy Birdseye cloth from our Made to Measure range. As the groomsmen ranged in size, the lapels were adjusted in size to ensure that each groomsman had the right proportions and looked impeccable standing next to Phillip.
Some comment from the groom himself….
Carl more than delivered on the brief. Carl’s eye for detail was extraordinary, especially with matching the tone of black from the jacket to the pants and vest. Carl absolutely nailed every design feature that we discussed in our consultations.
Dealing with Carl throughout the process, from the initial consultation to the final fitting, I was very confident that Carl was going to deliver an exceptional product. Carl always went the extra mile and exceeded all of my expectations, especially with the level of detail he put into the groomsmen’s suits.
I could not have asked for anything better for my wedding day. The fit was absolute perfection and when I put on my suit in the morning, it certainly felt like I was getting married that day. The suit and shirt felt light and was very breathable which was important as I was wearing a 3-piece suit at the peak of summer.
The jacket change in the evening took the outfit to the next level and made it feel like it was party time!
A big congratulations and a big thank you to Phillip and Emily and their bridal party. It was such a pleasure to working with you all; I look back on each of the fittings and consults with such fond memories.
I can’t wait for weddings to return in the form that we are all used to.
All the best
