The glitz and glamour of awards season has just begun, and there’s nothing like the Golden Globes to set the bar for a new year of red carpet attire and elegant trends.
I was so pleased, but not completely surprised, to see that velvet has made a huge come back, and especially in the realm of formal wear. Just look at this amazing array of beautifully tailored velvet blazers being worn by some of Hollywood’s leading men. But let’s take a good look at where and how this trend reappeared.
Let’s rewind some eight months to the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meaghan Markle. After the ceremony and all of the pomp and splendour of the royal processions, the newlyweds changed their outfits in favour of more contemporary evening wear for the reception at Frogmore House on the grounds of Windsor Castle. This is where Harry reemerged, with his new bride, sporting a bespoke velvet dinner jacket with satin lapels made by Savile Row legends Dege & Skinner. Since that very day, the amount of enquiries that I myself have received for made to measure wedding suits with a touch of velvet has increased dramatically, its a trend.
Fast forward to the 2019 Golden Globes and here we have it. Velvet dinner jackets and blazers galore. Here are some of my favourites:
Dave Franco – Black Velvet Jacquard Dinner Jacket
Sasha Baron Cohen – Charcoal Velvet Smoking Jacket with Shawl Lapel
Scott Evans – Gold Velvet Dinner Jacket with Satin Peak Lapels
